Best bang for your buck! -an average Joe review
First off, I appreciate the lengths that the first reviewer went to in creating thee most thorough and informative review I've ever read. While I'm sure the author was being serious during all of that, in the end I couldn't help but giggle thinking of a scene from "Good Morning Vietnam"

The best Sub I've heard.
To start, I must admit that I can't outdo the previous review. All I can add is that this the best subwoofer I've ever experienced. Since the price has come down, it is truly a bargain. The bass is smooth and refined. It blends with my other speakers and doesn't produce that crude booming sound that I've heard from other subs. From Klipsch Forum advice, I wired it with a single wire coming from the "Sub out" connection on my Harman Kardon AVR 3600. This is real audiophile equipment at a bargain price. In the past, I paid just as much for a low end HSU Sub which doesn't come close to matching the Klipsch sound.
Finally got it right, after an entire stores top-tier selection was exhausted, now very happy.
First off, I puchased this LFE from NFM and this is one of their top-tier Subwoofers. I was foremost interested in a sealed sub, and is what I asked for. Their sales people are not really that knowledgable, I did most of the talking via phone after as many returns as I had.

When purchasing a LFE the important thing to look for is ported/sealed, Frequency response, and RMS. Ported or sealed is a user preference. For Frequency response anything below 16 is not nessasary, and 16hz up to 25hz the sound is felt not heard. High RMS wattage will sound louder and reproduce the sound cleaner, if the Subwoofer is rated at a lower if not equal RMS.

1. LFE= Low Frequency Emmitter (HF is High Frequency)
2. Enclosure= Box the subwoffer is set in.
3. Subwoofer= LFE speaker
4. RMS= Root Means Square, constant wattage a speaker will receive at any time

Fantastic for Home Theater
About a week ago, I upgraded to the Klipsch Sub-12 from a lower powered 10" sub to complete the 7.1 home theater set up in my 12ft by 19ft basement room. I watch a lot of action movies and concerts on Blu-Ray/DVD. I highly recommend this subwoofer if you like to feel the deep bass and to shake the house. I located the sub at the front left corner of the room (about 10" away from the walls). This Klipsch seems to play noticeably deeper and louder (with power to spare) than the sub that I replaced. The sound from the subwoofer is not directional. Its sound just fills the room.

One small negative (easily fixed) is the small blue LED light on the lower front face of the subwoofer cabinet. The light shows that the sub is ON and operating. In my dark room, the LED is too bright. My solution was to simply put a small piece of black electrical tape over the light to hide it. The tape blends in with the cabinet and is not noticeable.

BOOM BOOM! Clean LOWS!
I owned the original Klipsch Sub-12 (same model as Sub-12HG except minor cosmetics) and gave it to a friend a couple years ago. I've regretted doing that ever since and have been on the look-out for a powered sub with comparable quality at a competitive price. Needless to say, I haven't had much luck... until the Sub-12HG went on sale for $250!!! You can't find ANYTHING comparable for that price, or even around $300. I'm totally stoked and am going to love every minute I have this turned on. Perfect for music, movies, etc. You can control the amount of power the amp delivers to the sub (gain) and the frequency that is allowed to pass through the built in cross-over (adjustable from 40 to 120Hz). The auto-power switch is also a nice feature since you don't have to constantly hassle with turning off the sub when you are done.
All in all, I couldn't be happier with the quality of another sub in this price range... this is really a $500 sub and that's not MSRP crap! To top it...
Pleasant surprise
When I bough this subwoofer I was a bit skeptical. I have been researching for quite a while and narrowed my choices between this Klipsch Sub-12 and a Polk Audio PSW-505. I have been reading all the reviews that praised the sound of the Klipsch for under "$500" and the sort, but said that there are better sounding subwoofers out there in much higher price ranges. While the Polk PSW-505 seems like a very comparable subwoofer based on specs and price alone, I decided to go with the Klipsch because of the down-firing design. After opening, installing and properly setting up this sub, I was completely blown away that such sound can come from a home theater subwoofer. The power is more than anyone would ever need to listen to movies or even music, and the sound itself can hit so low that your whole house will be shaking. Dripping with bass
Bass is clear, deep, oh, and LOUD! If you really want your HT to sound like an IMAX theater, then I whole-heartedly recommend this sub. It fills in the low end seamlessly. It also takes the burden of reproducing low lows off of your other speakers (which aren't nearly as capable as the PSW505). This is not a cheap "rumble box". The first movie I watched with this sub connected is Peter Jackson's "King Kong". The raptor/bronto chase through the gully is off the hook! The 30-ton bronto's gallop will set up a standing wave in your intestinal tract!!! But loud does not mean muddy or rumbly with the 505. I was pushing the sub to about 50% volume and I thought my house's windows may break. And like I said, that was only at about 50% volume. Besides, you want to be a good neighbor and not max this thing out cuz it can be heard clearly from a good 50 feet away. I find that it performs exceedingly well at about 15% of its capability in my medium/small sided living room. At normal/reasonable...

Low and Tight
Was very iffy on this sub since I was going from a $1,000 Velodyne to this, but let me tell you I am not disapointed.Low tight bass with no distortion or rumble, sounds much better playing music than the Velodyne did,even though I use it mainly for movies.In my opinion you are getting a high end sounding subwoofer for $300, there is no way you can beat that!Tried to see how loud I could take it to see at what level it would start to distort, but could not get there because my windows were about to pop And my nose started to itch from the tremendous vibration, teeth rattled a little too! trust me I am not exagerating! BUY THIS SUB!!!!!

Update: YES March 10 2012 and this sub is still going strong....Amazing!
Great sound from a Great company
Polk Audio is still making great speakers. I bought my first pair almost 30 years ago in 1978, had them for almost 25 years till I replaced them with smaller ones with a Velodyne sub. When my overpriced Velodyne sub went out on me last month, I decided to give Polk Audio a try since my first experience with Polk was so good. All I can say is that I'm glad I went with the 12" and for the approx $300 price tag, it sounds as good if not better than my high end $800 Velodyne sounded. For the extra $75 or so, get the 12" as opposed to the 10", you'll be glad you did.

Meets all of my requirements
I originally was going to order the ES150PBk 200watt sub-woofer, but it was not going to be shipped until mid April. So I went with JBL's 300watt RMS (500Watt Peak) model. I paid $353.00 with a $30.00 off (for applying for an Amazon credit card) and this brought the price down to $323.00 with "free" super saver delivery. This unit will shake your living room during explosions in action movies (check out Pearl Harbor and Live Free, Die Young) and provides a nice, tight bass in music. I only have it turned up to just passed the mid-point & that is very loud. It is well designed, attractive, and you get more than your money's worth. You can not go wrong for this price! By the way, it does come with a removable black grill that is not pictured. I researched several other sub-woofers and none came close to providing the specs that this one does at this price and from such a well-established company. good honest bass
When used in a small room, this subwoofer delivers!

Frequency response is smooth with no annoying resonances (booming). While the purist might want a slightly lower -3dB frequency, it is better than most of the other speakers in this price range (and getting an extra third octave or so is pretty expensive, and in my opinion barely noticable).

You will want to spend some time getting the level just right. I have a receiver which automatically does this, so it was very simple. If you don't you will want to try a variety of program material to tweak it.

I can't evaluate how this speaker holds up when driven at it's rated maximum power. I would blow the windows (and my ears) out if I tried it in my room.

Overall, a beautiful product. Well designed and built and worth the money.
Great Sub at a budget price
Was looking for a sub for my stereo receiver and ended up with this one. Using this for music only. Like other JBL products, the build quality is excellent. Auto on/off feature saves power. Has LFE input only, no speaker level inputs. I am not sure I like the design...as you can see, its kinda cone shaped. I am having some difficulty to digest that. I have placed it in one corner and had to put a faux flower vase on top of it so that it doesn't remind me of its cone shape all the time :) I still bought it because it is very difficult to come across a front firing closed body (i.e., non-ported) sub with such high power rating as this (400W ~ 700W). Shop around and you wont find very many subs within this range. Besides, high-current front firing subs are quite rare these days. JBL has another newer sub like this (L8400P) but it costs $600 ~$1000. Polk Audio has one 12 inch sub but with much lower power rating (460W peak). The more expensive Velodynes Energy etc. all are down firing...
