Onkyo HT-S5200 7.1-Channel Home Entertainment Receiver/Speaker Package with iPod Dock (Black)
If you want an idea of where Onkyo’s home theater packages are heading, the HT-S5200 is well worth checking out. Like previous Onkyo 7.1-channel receiver/speaker packages, the HT-S5200 delivers reassuringly hefty amounts of power and all-round performance. And in line with other recent offerings, it’s also perfectly suited for high-definition entertainment in the home: 1080p video takes center stage from sources such as Blu-ray Disc, DVD, HD broadcasting, and gaming. The emphasis is still on Onkyo’s audio prowess, so the HT-S5200 is equipped with three groundbreaking Audyssey technologies that will give you the edge in terms of surround sound. It also features some exciting innovations from Onkyo: a dedicated port that connects the iPod via the Dock for the iPod and DSP modes specifically designed for gaming.
With so many on offer these days, it is great to have a name you can trust. This item is certainly that and will be a perfect buy. The distributor have added some great touches and this equals great value.

Great item for budget home theater! Much better than others.
Got this for a little more than $400. Works great. Easy installation. Many options for a cheap model. I bought the Sony system earlier, about $700 and had to return them. Very happy with the Onkyo. I play my 360 and PS3 on it and the sound is crystal clear and deep bass! Can notice all 7.1 channels! Make sure you use the optical sound. Highly recommended for this price range, probably up to the $600 or even $700.

Will absolutely need optical audio cable
I did a lot of research before buying this model. I read all the reviews. I even read the reviews that tried to explain HDMI and how it only passes through this unit. I guess I just didn't get it.

I bought the unit for price point, Consumer Reports and others rave reviews of the sound quality, and because I've had great enjoyment of Onkyo stereo receivers in the past.

Only after buying the unit, and reading the manual, and researching for about 3 hours online, did I learn the following:

HDMI wires carry both HD video and sound. But, with the Onkyo 5200, HDMI is strictly pass through. This means the video and sound never stop or do anything inside this box. They pass through to the TV. The TV cannot process sound into 5.1 or 7.1. Supposedly, you can send the HD sound back from the TV to this unit through an optical audio cable. OR, you can simply send the sound part of your HD DVR or Bluray player directly through optical audio cable or audio coaxial...
So far very good.
Just setting up this thing. It is a breeze. No problem setting up, made for people like me (not a sound connoisseur, but listens to a lot of music and have a need for 1080p on my games, videos).

I will use the multi-room controls a lot.

[...]
The sound is really nice, it has an active bass, and the surround works super nice. Watching Star Wars /LoTR and other movies that use sound effects suddenly give the movies more depth and another dimension. Music is super nice, it really handles both deep and high notes really well.

I have yet to get with all the features on it, and will update this review.
I have connected my PS3, with HDMI, and optical sound.
Working on the xbox, and tv sound out to see which is the better. Thinking xbox with the optical and tv with regular sound as I don't watch too much TV...we'll see.

I programmed the remote to control my TV too, and so no need for tons of remotes. I can also (sort of) control the...

Outstanding AVR With Great Sound Quality
This is the first HK product I have listened to and I am impressed. The sound quality is excellent. Natural timbre and dynamic with no hints of coloration. I evaluated the units sound quality using Blu-Ray, SACD, 96k/24 bit digital sources from a Marantz NA7004 via optical input and CD. When I initially listened to high quality sources the stereo image and dynamics were just not right. I discovered that by default on an input Dolby Volume processing was enabled. Turning this off on selected inputs resulted in pristine sound quality on 2 channel sources. The sound processing modes (Dolby etc) worked fine for watching video sources like TV and DVD but I preferred turning those off for Blu-Ray and high quality stereo audio sources. I also connected up a Cambridge Audio 640 Phono Preamp and listened to some vinyl. Again the result was fine audio quality.

Video quality out of the unit was excellent. I observed no problems on Blu-Ray or DVD sources. Dolby TrueHD and DTS...

Harmon Kardon AVR 3650 Hits the Spot
I actually rate this receiver as 4.5 stars.

As a previous owner of the AVR 3600 I was skeptical that this unit would be worthy of owning. I received it as a replacement from HK after having 2 of the 3600's that had serious issues. On the negative side this unit has very few analog inputs and outputs, but that is a sign of the times. Some of my old obsolete equipment is not provided for, so i have to run direct from the device to the display, and do video switching at the display. It would be nice to go direct to the receiver, and output all through hdmi to the display. This leads to the only other complaint I have, and that is the unit does not scale 4:3 images to my liking on a 16:9 display. Images are either cropped, over stretched or those annoying black bars are present. It would be nice if there was a happy medium between stretching and cropping available. This is solved by the same direct video route i used above, and using the display to scale them (Panasonic...
Awesome!
1 word: Awesome! Many words: The receiver is fantastic. The audio and video come through great. I have my AppleTV connected to it, as well as a Blu-ray player and cable box and it couldn't be better. I listen to Internet radio through it as well, and while that could be easier to setup, having a web interface does make it better. I do wish they'd update the list of Internet radio feeds on the receiver because many of them are out of date.

A few quirks: The manual says to press the Setup button on the remote control to begin setup. There is no such button so I had to press it on the face of the receiver. Also, the very light printing on a black background is hard to see. And the black backplate makes getting the speaker wires in there a bit difficult. But these are nitpicks.

What's important is that the on-screen controls are great, the audio and video are great, and it's easy to use. Like I said at the beginning: Awesome!

My thoughts on the Onkyo HT-S8409
I purchased this system to replace my Denon AVR-788 receiver. Onkyo had several models that I looked at, however I decided on this one because it is network capable, has the features I was looking for and is firmware upgradeable. As far as I can tell it uses a 10/100 based NIC. Out of the box and connected to my network I had access to few services, however after completing the update I had access to vTuner, Pandora, Rhapsody, Sirius/XM iRadio, Slacker, Mediafly, Napster iRadio, Spotify, Last.FM, and AUPEO. There is a "My Favorites" feature where you can save up to 40 Internet radio stations. The system suppoprts DLNA certified media servers, Windows Media Player 11 and 12, and Windows Media Connect 2.0.

It can handle the following audio formats, MP3, WMA, WMA lossless, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG and LPCM. I could stream audio files from my PC straight to the receiver or use a plugged in USB device such as a flash drive. I also have a LG N1T1 (1 Terabyte) NAS on my network. I use...

Great system for the price... Quality
Ok, so this is my first review... but with the negative write-ups on this system, i feel i need to throw my 2 cents in.
For starters... the other reviews about the packaging, and being beat up when it gets to the destination: I tracked my order from day one, I didn't have 2 day delivery or anything like that, and I saw it had stopped somewhere in TN for a night... That got me a little worried because you would think with something this big, they would be pushing it as fast as they could to reduce the liability. Anyway... NO issues whatsoever when it got to my home. I live in FL, it was shipped from MN. Yes, the box had some scratches and bruises, but the way it's packed it really tight, and wrapped nice. 5/5 for packaging and 4 day total delivery time.
HDMI issues as per other reviews: I have had ZERO issues, owned for a month, and switch between inputs multiple times daily. Google is your friend when it comes to HDMI and how to set it... whether you do RHID, or through,...
Beautiful sound and appearance
I am not anywhere near an expert on speakers. I wanted to buy my husband a home theatre system to go along with the Sony Bravia XBR55HX929 I bought him as a Christmas surprise, so I started doing a lot of research. Initially, I totally intended to buy one of those rinky dink HTiB sets but after many (10-15) trips into best buy asking 34325543 questions, I decided to spend more money and buy a quality system. What attracted me to this particular set was only the appearance of the speakers themselves. I needed "tall" front speakers due to the design of our set up, and these ones looked really nice. I was quite surprised to find, when I opened the box, that this set it just onkyo's TX-NR609 receiver and their SKS-HT870 speaker set.

There's nothing I can say about this that the reviewer before me hasn't, other than the box it was delivered in is HUGE. I didn't measure it, but I'm 5'6 and it came up to at least my under arms and was about 3 feet wide. Set up was fairly...

1st Amazon review...pleasantly impressed
This is my 1st surround sound system. I took a chance with this since all the others (Onkyo, Samsung, Sony) seemed either to problematic or not robust enough for the price. The box was huge but everything inside was really well packaged.

I set it all up really quick without the need for the instructions which were either on a Quick guide sheet or the included CD-ROM manual. I used the YPAO mic for auto calibration and from that point everything just worked. I have my PS3, Xbox360 and Comcast 3D DVR box (as well as my old Sony mini-disc player) hooked up to it which in turn is hooked up to my 73" 3DTV. The remote while confusing at first has alot of options and is organized by section. I tested the 7.1 channel sound and 3D capabilities by popping in Tron Legacy. It was amazing both picture and sound was perfect for my medium sized living room. The subwoofer is very powerful and I have the volume set a tad higher the 1 or 2. No way in hell would I need to turn it up...

Awesome set
I started reviewing home theater in a box set, since I did not want to go through the pain of finding receivers, and separate speakers. After trying one from a different company which did not work for video as well, and had multiple issues, I had to return and get the yamaha. The sound quality is breathtaking. The device also looks great, all black with Yamaha logos. I have the unit for past 8 months and I have all my devices connected to Yamaha receiver and then a HDMI connection to Samsung 46" 1080p TV. I have a Panasonic Blu ray player, google TV and a Panasonic VCR (yes a VCR) connected to the receiver. I also have a Audio cable for connecting an android phone and iphone connected to it. The subwoofer is awesome. I have watched few movies to test (Narnia, Mary Poppins, willy Wonka chocolate factory). I stream lot of shows through this. I don't have Cable TV, but have OTA system. The Yamaha system has no issues with any of the inputs. The Google TV remote also controls the yamaha...
Way under-rated
This is supposed to be a sound system in a box, but it exceeds that... This system is top of the line for sound. Yamaha makes great stuff. The sub-woofer does not over power the rest of the sound system, but it can if you want it to. I have this set up in a 12' wide x 22' long theater room. The sound system is set in overhead cabinet system that houses the wiring and the screen (about 14" deep and 12" high). The sound is fabulous and can actually drive you out of the room if you get too much volume. This system could run well in rooms larger than mine and still have plenty of power. The sound is crisp, the lows are great.

Great right out of the box.
I am usually skeptical of first release technology (Airplay) on a newly released product. I waited almost a month before I found this item in stock after the pre-release press. After hooking the device up to my network, and connecting the 7 speakers, I had the Yamaha app downloaded and running airplay in less than 5 minutes. My Android, IPOD Touch, and IPAD2 all worked without any issues. I have the receiver in a media room with 7 speakers and it beats the Dennon hands down. I have had two Dennons and both were plagued with problems and I will never buy another. I can control this device from anywhere in the house (as long as I am withing WI-FI connect).

The only downside I see so far, is the device does not support Pandora for music streaming, but I can use an IPOD touch on a different AV source to solve the Pandora streaming. Not all the remote functions work with the app but the major items such as inputs, sound selection, work great.

Also, I see that...

Welcome to the confusing new world of home theater settings.
Had it about a week now and played with it for a couple of hours each night tweaking the settings and trying out various streaming music, tv shows and HD movies. This was a replacement for an Onkyo HTIB system that was 7.1 also, but did not have HDMI switching or DTS-HD/DD-TrueHD abilities. Thus far I can say I really like the basic function of the amp and the SCENE feature.

Pros:
-Near future proof with 4k passthrough
-Every codec known to mankind (including DSD for SACD* Bonus)
-Power off HDMI switching (very useful if you listen to audio through the tv speakers sometimes like I do when wife is sleeping. Extra bonus is the audio does not pass through to the TV speakers while the AVR is ON, but automatically does once it's turned off. This means you don't have to mute the TV while you have the home theater system on and then turn up the volume after you turn it off)
-Options Galore including an 8-band frequency adjustment on every channel...
Bought for multi-zone and networking.
I was looking for an in-expensive receiver that could function as a home theatre box, had airplay and could supply music to a second zone (my kitchen). This unit fits the bill and has plenty of power and networking capability. Other reviews on the web have commented on the bad remote and bad on screen menus. I'd agree but these aren't deal breakers. I came very close to returning the unit due to an issue with the second zone support. You can't independently alter the volume in each of the two zones. The single volume control raises and lowers in both zones. What you can do is setup an offset for your second zone to have it always louder or quieter than your main zone. After some experimenting I found that this worked OK. With the second zone configured, you end up with a 5.1 theatre system and two of the original 7.1 speakers for your second zone.

There is a IOS app for ipad/iphone that lets you control the receiver. It is adequate but not nearly as good as others...

Read this before buying this Onkyo product.
I thought I did a lot of research before purchasing this all in one set. Unfortunately I never when on the official Onkyo support forum to see all of the HDMI issues with their receivers. The set arrived in perfect condition in a HUGE box with everything inside. The speakers are awesome and the powered sub-woofer really brings the bass to the party.

My home theater set-up is pretty simple. I plugged all of my HDMI components into the receiver and then have one HDMI out to my projector. This allows me to select what's on the projector from my Onkyo system remote and video and sound are all handled by the HDMI cords.

The setup worked perfectly for a week. Then I started getting a NO Signal on my projector screen when I tried to play a movie from my bluray player. Through several problem solving steps I was able to isolate the issue to the HDMI out from the Onkyo to what ever source I hooked it up to; projector or HD TV. I kept getting a "No signal" on the...

Excellent HTIB
All I can say is wow! This HTIB is amazing. Straight out of the box, without any configuration, I was amazed at the depth and clarity of the sound this thing puts out. At first I though the auto configuraion tool was broken, then I read the instructions and it did a mighty fine job. It turned the sub down more than I would like, but other than that it did a great job. The OSD is nice and easy to understand, there are TONS of listening modes but I am very impressed with the PLzII height THX setting. I am using the surround high setup (smallish open floor plan) and everything comes out amazing. For the price, I doubt you could do better.
Fabulous home-theater THX solution
This system is way, way above others you see advertised. It includes a powerful receiver, a ton of connectivity (including network), and great speakers. When it arrives, it is 135 pounds, and HUGE, but I fit the entire system into a small office and it just blows me away. Great for TV or music. I can't speak highly enough of the brand and the product. What a steal at under $800, freight included!

Great Purchase
I wasn't really sure what to expect with the S5400. I hadn't had a surround sound setup in awhile, and my last home theater in a box was underwhelming, but I had heard good things about the S5300 and when I went to purchase one, I saw that a newer version had been released. From what I understand the S5400 is pretty much the same as the S5300 with the added benefit of the Audyssey mic calibrator. For someone who doesn't know anything about audio calibration it really can't get easier. Just plug the mic in and let Audyssey pretty much take care of the rest. Sound-wise, no complaints. Sounds great for movies and very good for music as well. I forgot how much I was missing in films without surround sound, and friends and family love it.

I wasn't able to do a standard 7.1 setup because of lack of room, so for awhile I had the system in a 5.1 configuration, that was before I figured out I could set the system up for Dolby Pro Logic IIz. What this does is it allows you to take...

Amazing Sound and Simple to Set Up
As of 5/29/11 (After using system for 2 weeks)

Let me begin by saying that this Onkyo Home Theater system is the first surround sound system that I have ever owned. I am not what one would call an "audiophile". So if you're looking for a more in-depth, technical review, I can't help you.

I was surprised when the gigantic HT-S5400 package arrived at my house. The speakers, sub-woofer, and receiver were all a lot bigger than I thought they would be. After being briefly overwhelmed, I got to work setting up the system and finished faster than expected.

Although I am a beginner, I found this system really easy to set up. The wires are all color-coded and installing the surround speakers is simple. There is no need for mounts or brackets and you can let the speakers hang on a nail or screw. This gives it a clean look. There are 4 HDMI slots are enough for your Blu-ray players, cable boxes, game consoles, and any other media players. I didn't know how to set...
Almost Perfect
Overall, I'm very happy with this system, however I really wanted to give it a 4.5 rating.
- Sound quality is very good, but finding the right sound mode for a source is imperative.
- Bass is incredible, I can feel the vibrations clear across the house when bass rich music is playing.
- LOTS of input options, I could hook up every piece of AV equipment I've ever owned.
- Lots of different sound modes to get a particular source sounding the way you want
- Audyssey was easy to use to get sound settings configured for my room and speaker setup

I only have three disappointments with this system, but they're pretty minor.
- It does not up convert non-HDMI video inputs to HDMI which I hadn't thought of when buying this and wish I had.
- The Subwoofer gives off a quiet electrical hum, like power lines or old fluorescent lights.
- OSD only works with HDTV resolution signals 480, 720, 1080. Only bothersome due to my projector being 1280 x 800

This System Will Make Your Room Go BOOM, BOOM, BOOM!
I have waited about 6 weeks to post a review on this product, due to some reviews having issues with there subwoofer and other issues. Let me first start off by saying, I have not had any issues with the home theater system (knock on wood).

The sound this system makes with my new Vizio M3D550KD 55-Inch 240 Hz Class Theater 3D Edge Lit Razor LED LCD HDTV with VIZIO Internet Apps - Black, is unbelievable. I have the speakers mounted to Pinpoint White Speaker Wall/Ceiling Mount for Pre-Wired Home Theater - Pinpoint AM20W, except the center speaker which I have sitting on my entertainment center.

To calibrate the sound to match your room, use the Audyssey Room Correction that comes with the system. It takes about 15 minutes and makes a world of a difference. You can always adjust the subwoofer to meet your BOOM BOOM...

There is an easy trick to fix sub-woofer problem
I did extensive research and read all reviews associated with this HT-S5500 system at Amazon.com before buying it. After comparing this system with other Onkyo receivers, and noting excellent reviews for other Onkyo systems, I decided to take the risk despite subwoofer malfunction, with it in mind that Amazon's customer service is excellent if I do encounter a problem for the purchase. After all, it has over 1000W power and adequate connections for my purpose. I bought it in November. It is holidays shopping season so Amazon gives me until the end of January to return it if something goes wrong, though I admit that it could be a pain on the neck to return a 70+ lb box.

The receiver is exactly what I was looking for. I would give it 4.5 stars if I could, due to the big size of speakers and the thin wire many others noted in their reviews. The first week, I did not do Audyssey calibration. Everything works flawless, including the subwoofer. By the way, I was amazed by how...
My review started as a 4 star when I first got it.
This system is amazing. Tons of options, lots of configurations for setting up everything, and tons of settings. The Audyssey sound set up make setting up everything and optimizing your system flawless and easy. The lack of proprietary connections means that replacement parts are cheap, easy to find and customize. The sound is great compared to previous Sony 5.1 system.

When you buy this system also get new wires, it comes with 24 gauge wires, I suggest 16 gauge, also get banana plugs (They make for a cleaner and nicer looking setup.)

Only a few problems, which is why I gave it 4 stars;
Needs an update bad to have better functionality with a PS3. Turn deep color off on the PS3 for it to work properly.
Wires are too small as mentioned above.
Lack of Android support compared to Apple support
Key hole mounting on speakers vs screw in mounting.

(EDIT 9/9/12) Okay so I have had this product for close to three months now and I am...
