Helpful advice for those interested in the RX-V673
While others have delivered much praise for the Yamaha RX-V673 receiver, I wanted to build on their collective comments with my own findings. The intent is to share my experience with the hope it may help others make a decision on whether the RX-V673 is right for them.

In 1999 I purchased a Yamaha RX-V1000 receiver, which I've been very happy with for the last thirteen+ years. My wife and I recently purchased a new 60" Samsung flat screen television and I learned the advantages of utilizing the HDMI connection to the new television. One problem: my old RX-V1000 doesn't have HDMI connections because it's badly outdated. So I began researching receivers and, like my original search back in 1999, I found the features that I'm looking for and the quantity of favorable reviews all pointed me back to Yamaha.

** For everyone mourning the loss of Pandora support on this generation of receivers, please note that Yamaha recently (Nov 2012) released a firmware update for the RX-V673 that enables Pandora / SiriusXM / Rhapsody & Napster music services.

I'm really satisfied with this receiver, it's very flexible with a ton of inputs, HDMI-CEC & HDMI-ARC support, Net radio + airplay + DLNA client. Everything works fine for me. The only thing it's missing is a headphone-style input jack for portable music players. To get audio from a headphone jack into this amp you'll need a 3.5mm-to-RCA cable and plug it into one of the rear RCA inputs.

Automatic sound setup through YPAO is great, it gives you a smooth balanced sound that you can fine-tune to your liking

Great receiver, especially for someone new to home theater receivers
I've had this receiver for about five weeks and have had the chance to try out quite a few of its features, but not all of them, so this is a review in progress that I will add to from time to time.

In the meantime, here are some great things about this receiver:
* The app for the ipod touch, ipad and iphone is great. Very easy to use. Using this app is the best way to use the receiver's Pandora feature without going through your t.v. or an external device (such as a blu-ray player) because you get great album artwork on the screen of your Apple device. Using the app you can control bass, treble, volume, elevate voice levels (useful for movies), and other features. Best of all, I can be anywhere in my house and control these features (skip songs, raise and lower the volume, etc.) as long as I am connected to the same network that my Yamaha receiver is connected to. Onkyo TX-NR809 THX Certified 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver (Black)

I upgraded from an Onkyo TX-SR606 which I owned for about 3 years. I loved my 606 so I figured why not stick with what I know/like (Onkyo). I know about all of the problems people had with the 808 and Onkyo has stood by their product and honoring repairs even though a product may be out of warranty.

I have now had an opportunity to check out all of the bells and whistles of this receiver.

Setup - 5/5, very easy if you have had any experience in the past with any receiver (highly suggest banana plugs and 14 or 12 gauge speaker wire). The included calibration microphone really makes things easy - plug in the mic and the receiver will automatically switch to the onscreen GUI for speaker setup and calibration. Once the setup detects which speakers you have hooked up you can then setup...

Incredible sound!
I've had the previous generation 808 for several months, but had the need for a second receiver and wanted one I was already familiar with. Quite simply, I'm amazed at the sound quality of the 809. All music and movies sound much, much better - and the 808 is no slouch. The sound is richer, fuller and more balanced for all audio files - hi def files on my server, but also streaming music at low bit rates. Surround sound decoding and balance for movies is much improved and really adds to the "you are there" experience. The 809 helped me greatly with one of my major problems - subwoofers that don't have a lot of bark when Bruce Willis blows away the bad guys. Subs now sound much deeper and finally shake the floor and the only difference in my system is the 809. Onkyo has obviously put a lot of work into improving the audio processing technologies. High end features, low end quality!
Head this warring, it may look like a good deal, just be prepared for multiple tries to get a unit that works.

I bought this product during the "Cyber Monday" sales for a good price. Unfortunately the product I received was defective. This was confirmed through a brief phone call with a very nice support person, and this is where my experience went from bad to terrible. I had tried everything to get the center channel on the receiver to work, but to no avail, at the request of the phone tech support I tried resetting the receiver. It did not enable sound from the Center channel; it did however cause the loss of sound to the left surround port directly below the center channel ports. I also attempted to contact Onkyo through their email support, over 48hrs later I received a reply with the same information as the phone technical support.

The phone technician recommended I return the product as a defective unit. This was in lieu of performing a warranty...

excellent receiver..some flaws
this is my first receiver and very happy to own it...cnet rated this model excellent for sound quality, user interface and connectivity...and overall rating was high on other websites too...really like on-screen GUI...makes life easy...helpful to understand signal info...and troubleshoot if there is any problem...just bought it yesterday...connected klipsch quintet 5 speakers....planning to do YPAO calibration next..
also analog (480i) to 1080p conversion is pretty decent... picture quality has improved...the advantage is having to run only a single hdmi cable to the TV

I have been using this receiver for 2 weeks now...there are couple of issues...lip sync problem while playing blu ray movies..there is a sync adjustment... but this happened in between the movie and I had to keep adjusting it ...alternate option is to stop playing and then restart it again...then there was no lag.....also noticed sound will pass for about a sec couple of...

Great upgrade from my previous Yamaha
I own a rx-v663 and upgraded this past weekend to the RX-V667.

Skipping the 665 model was a good thing.

This one has a great on screen GUI for changing the settings.
It's an overlay, so you don't lose the video in the background when changing settings.
It pops out from the left side and then you scroll up and down to pick the setting
to change. Then those options are popped up from the bottom of the screen and you scroll
right and left.

6 HDMI is more than enough for me, in fact I have 3 left over after changing out things.
Biggest advantage is I am now able to plug in everything in to the receiver and able to change
the label that shows up on the receiver and the tv screen when changing sources.

My components running into the receiver are as follows

Oppo BDP-83
PS3
Computer with HDMI interface
(radeon 5770 so I get sound and audio)

Excellent sounding 7.2 AV receiver
I've always been impressed by Yamaha products and this receiver is no exception. It's a 7.2 channel receiver that packs an insane amount of features into a modest price.

Before I made the purchase, I called Yamaha's customer service guys and asked them a few questions and they were able to answer everything for me. I got right to a person who spoke English and they knew their products (and actually said they had a full lab for testing stuff).

So I bought the receiver and hooked it up to my 3D TV setup, along with my Wii (component), X-box 360 (HDMI), DirecTV DVR (HDMI), Yamaha YDS-12 iPod dock and 3D Blu-ray player (HDMI). It was easy to install and I still have plenty of HDMI inputs left for future expansion. I ran the YPAO auto setup and it was over before I came back from getting a snack in the kitchen. It properly detected all of my 7.2 speakers and everything appears to be working as intended.

I must say that I really love the onscreen GUI...

Great receiver
I purchased a TX-NR709 from another big online company out of New York with a B and an H in their name. I had nothing but problems with that unit. I sent it in to a repair facility for repair and then back the factory for repair and each time it was returned it had more problems than when I sent it.

Talia Garcia is the service manager at Onkyo and she is the consummate professional. I was so angry I don't know how she kept her cool. I had nothing good to say about Onkyo and yet Talia managed to always have a positive reply. Ultimately it was decided that the TX-NR709 needed to be replaced and an offer was made to replace that unit with the TX-NR717, which as of then had never yet been sold. I probably received one of the first receivers off the new production line and the difference between the 709 and the 717 was immediately noticeable. I have had zero problems with the 717. The sound is great, the functionality is great, the menus far exceed those of the 709 and to top it...

Onkyo 717
This Onkyo is replacing a 10 year old H/K receiver, so the tech inside is a huge upgrade, even if the prices would have been about even. I used to really into home theater back when I did it for a paycheck and I sold Onkyo and really had respect for them, so I looked at the features of the TX-NR717 as well as the price and decided that this would be the centerpiece of my home theater. It does not disappoint. With the exception of one issue this receiver has done everything I've asked of it and more. I've got my HD digital cable, Xbox 360, PS3/Bluray, Wii, all running through it and everything is so much better than it was with the older receiver, but of course that goes without saying.

Some things I really love about the 717:
+ 8 HDMI inputs. I want this thing to be useful for the next 3-5 years or so.
+ Network. For firmware upgrades, new internet radio options, etc.
+ HD upscaling, so I can plug in my Wii or older equipment and it looks better than...
A great upgrade of my 12 year old Onkyo!
I don't write a lot of reviews, but this model is new enough, I thought I should give my $.02. For starters, the TX-NR717 replaced an Onkyo TX-DS777 that I bought exactly 12 years ago. The 777 has been and still is a fantastic receiver, aside from idiosyncrasies due to it being outdated (more details below). If it hadn't been for those issues, I wouldn't have been in the market for a new receiver, but since I've never had a single problem with it, I went with Onkyo again.

I initially planned to get the TX-NR515, but after reading sour reviews from people having HDMI issues (having to unplug the unit every day), I started looking at the 616, only to find it had the same issues. Finally, someone posted that their 717 didn't have the HDMI issues, so even though it was about $250 more than the 515 at the time, I gave it a closer look.
