Great item for budget home theater! Much better than others.
Got this for a little more than $400. Works great. Easy installation. Many options for a cheap model. I bought the Sony system earlier, about $700 and had to return them. Very happy with the Onkyo. I play my 360 and PS3 on it and the sound is crystal clear and deep bass! Can notice all 7.1 channels! Make sure you use the optical sound. Highly recommended for this price range, probably up to the $600 or even $700.

Will absolutely need optical audio cable
I did a lot of research before buying this model. I read all the reviews. I even read the reviews that tried to explain HDMI and how it only passes through this unit. I guess I just didn't get it.

I bought the unit for price point, Consumer Reports and others rave reviews of the sound quality, and because I've had great enjoyment of Onkyo stereo receivers in the past.

Only after buying the unit, and reading the manual, and researching for about 3 hours online, did I learn the following:

HDMI wires carry both HD video and sound. But, with the Onkyo 5200, HDMI is strictly pass through. This means the video and sound never stop or do anything inside this box. They pass through to the TV. The TV cannot process sound into 5.1 or 7.1. Supposedly, you can send the HD sound back from the TV to this unit through an optical audio cable. OR, you can simply send the sound part of your HD DVR or Bluray player directly through optical audio cable or audio coaxial...
So far very good.
Just setting up this thing. It is a breeze. No problem setting up, made for people like me (not a sound connoisseur, but listens to a lot of music and have a need for 1080p on my games, videos).

The sound is really nice, it has an active bass, and the surround works super nice. Watching Star Wars /LoTR and other movies that use sound effects suddenly give the movies more depth and another dimension. Music is super nice, it really handles both deep and high notes really well.

So far, so SWEET!!! ***almost a year later it still is***

First, let me say that I am by no means an expert "audiophile", but I did a lot of research before deciding on the Onkyo HT-S3300. I purchased it through Tiger Direct as Amazon would have it, then not have it and state "This item has not yet been released". Anyway, the first thing I noticed is the box is labled HT-S3300(B) and does state for Blu-ray. Not sure if any other 3300 models exist but this is the one I received. Now, for the review:

The receiver is a REPEATER...not pass through. I also called Onkyo tech support prior to delivery and a courteous and professional lady stated all 2010 models are now REPEATERS. So, for some prior models (3200, 5200) you don't need a seperate audio cable (this of course is a personal preference, if you choose, for the 2010 models, or based upon the types of cables you presently have). Audio and video is done via HDMI. It is also HDMI 1.4a(supporting 3D video and Audio Return Channel)...

Best entry level system out there
I was skeptical before ordering this system as I ordered Sony HTSS360 (another popular and high rated entry level system) before and its sound was nowhere acceptable as the speakers were weak and sub-woofer was doing all the job, creating a woofy and very narrow ranged sound.

When I saw the 2010 Onkyo systems, I initially pre-ordered HT-S5300 but it being not released yet gave me some time to research and take a close look at ht-s3300 as well. After looking at its specs, I decided to give it a try and I am glad I did as it saved me $200. I am also happier with smaller and less-intrusive speakers of ht-s3300 compared to 5300 and having two less speakers to wire across the room. Now let me try to give you some opinion on the system and its sound.

A must buy!
This is my first ever online review on anything I've bought so far but I had to do it as it really deserves it and I find online reviews extremely valuable. I bought my Onkyo HT-S3300 about 2 weeks ago from Newegg rather than Amazon as it said "this item is not yet released" on the latter. I've done a lot of research before buying this unit and read a lot of reviews on a lot of other systems. I've also bought a Harman Kardon AVR 254 from Ebay along with Yamaha NS-SP1800BL 5.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker Package from Amazon for the basement 1 week earlier and I will make a comparison as well. Other reviewers have done a great job regarding technical details so I won't go into a lot of details with those.

Onkyo looks really nice and the piano black speakers were a great addition to our living room. I hooked up the Comcast HD DVR, Sony bdp-s360 blueray player and a Philips dvp3982 multi-region dvd player to the receiver through HDMI cables and connected it to my Sony Bravia...

Great System
So far the system has been great! Tons of features and sound quality has been outstanding. The built in streaming tools are a little so-so in the interface and wish they did not even bother. A nicer GUI would have been appreciated. It's ok though, my Samsung TV does it all so i dont use the Onkyo version anyway.

Great System!!!
The HT-S6500 sounds great and I was able to pick it up for more than half off around Christmas. The HT-S6500 is the newer version of the discontinued HT-S7409. The on screen display is not as detailed/nice looking as my 7409 unit but still easy enough to use. There is also not as many system settings with the 6500 as the 7409. To be honest I dont really use most of the 7409 settings anyway. All in all this system rocks and is well worth every penny. Very clear sound for movies, music, PS3, etc... Playing PS3 using this system is incredible. You feel truly feel like you are in the game! The sub rocks the house! I am not disappointed in my purchase, especially for the price I was able to snag it at. This is my 3rd Onkyo system and once again they did it right. You will not be disappointed!!!

My thoughts on the Onkyo HT-S8409
I purchased this system to replace my Denon AVR-788 receiver. Onkyo had several models that I looked at, however I decided on this one because it is network capable, has the features I was looking for and is firmware upgradeable. As far as I can tell it uses a 10/100 based NIC. Out of the box and connected to my network I had access to few services, however after completing the update I had access to vTuner, Pandora, Rhapsody, Sirius/XM iRadio, Slacker, Mediafly, Napster iRadio, Spotify, Last.FM, and AUPEO. There is a "My Favorites" feature where you can save up to 40 Internet radio stations. The system suppoprts DLNA certified media servers, Windows Media Player 11 and 12, and Windows Media Connect 2.0.

It can handle the following audio formats, MP3, WMA, WMA lossless, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG and LPCM. I could stream audio files from my PC straight to the receiver or use a plugged in USB device such as a flash drive. I also have a LG N1T1 (1 Terabyte) NAS on my network. I use...

Great system for the price... Quality
Ok, so this is my first review... but with the negative write-ups on this system, i feel i need to throw my 2 cents in.
For starters... the other reviews about the packaging, and being beat up when it gets to the destination: I tracked my order from day one, I didn't have 2 day delivery or anything like that, and I saw it had stopped somewhere in TN for a night... That got me a little worried because you would think with something this big, they would be pushing it as fast as they could to reduce the liability. Anyway... NO issues whatsoever when it got to my home. I live in FL, it was shipped from MN. Yes, the box had some scratches and bruises, but the way it's packed it really tight, and wrapped nice. 5/5 for packaging and 4 day total delivery time.
HDMI issues as per other reviews: I have had ZERO issues, owned for a month, and switch between inputs multiple times daily. Google is your friend when it comes to HDMI and how to set it... whether you do RHID, or through,...
Beautiful sound and appearance
I am not anywhere near an expert on speakers. I wanted to buy my husband a home theatre system to go along with the Sony Bravia XBR55HX929 I bought him as a Christmas surprise, so I started doing a lot of research. Initially, I totally intended to buy one of those rinky dink HTiB sets but after many (10-15) trips into best buy asking 34325543 questions, I decided to spend more money and buy a quality system. What attracted me to this particular set was only the appearance of the speakers themselves. I needed "tall" front speakers due to the design of our set up, and these ones looked really nice. I was quite surprised to find, when I opened the box, that this set it just onkyo's TX-NR609 receiver and their SKS-HT870 speaker set.

Read this before buying this Onkyo product.
I thought I did a lot of research before purchasing this all in one set. Unfortunately I never when on the official Onkyo support forum to see all of the HDMI issues with their receivers. The set arrived in perfect condition in a HUGE box with everything inside. The speakers are awesome and the powered sub-woofer really brings the bass to the party.

My home theater set-up is pretty simple. I plugged all of my HDMI components into the receiver and then have one HDMI out to my projector. This allows me to select what's on the projector from my Onkyo system remote and video and sound are all handled by the HDMI cords.

The setup worked perfectly for a week. Then I started getting a NO Signal on my projector screen when I tried to play a movie from my bluray player. Through several problem solving steps I was able to isolate the issue to the HDMI out from the Onkyo to what ever source I hooked it up to; projector or HD TV. I kept getting a "No signal" on the...

Excellent HTIB
All I can say is wow! This HTIB is amazing. Straight out of the box, without any configuration, I was amazed at the depth and clarity of the sound this thing puts out. At first I though the auto configuraion tool was broken, then I read the instructions and it did a mighty fine job. It turned the sub down more than I would like, but other than that it did a great job. The OSD is nice and easy to understand, there are TONS of listening modes but I am very impressed with the PLzII height THX setting. I am using the surround high setup (smallish open floor plan) and everything comes out amazing. For the price, I doubt you could do better.
Fabulous home-theater THX solution
This system is way, way above others you see advertised. It includes a powerful receiver, a ton of connectivity (including network), and great speakers. When it arrives, it is 135 pounds, and HUGE, but I fit the entire system into a small office and it just blows me away. Great for TV or music. I can't speak highly enough of the brand and the product. What a steal at under $800, freight included!

Sensuous Surround
I'm a little chagrined I waited so long to immerse myself in the world of 5.1 surround sound.

Most websites on the subject will tell you to get all of your speakers from the same brand, so the harmonics are all cousins of each other. Well, with Bose bookshelf speakers, the accompanying surround speakers would have been another grand, so I decided to bottom end with Sony.

These little puppies are weird in that you can't take the mesh covers off to spock the look of the speaker diaphragms, but that's the only weird thing. They ship with the tiniest capellini-sized speaker wire you can imagine, which helps you enjoy your new sound straight out of the box until you can get some more decent sized wire.

For a starter kit, these are thoroughly sufficient, plus, they're sleek and unobtrusive. If you haven't experienced surround sound anywhere but the theaters, get these babies and rent Apocalypse Now, or any of the Bourne movies. (Or better yet, watch the dust...

What wow sounds like
I have this set paired with the SS-B3000 bookshelf speakers. These speakers sound amazing compared to my old speakers. The center channel is crisp and clear. The rear speakers add great depth to movies. I was watching Pirates of the Caribbean 2 to test things out, it's like you're in the movie. I've never experienced that kind of sound before.

EDIT: I just upgraded my receiver to the STR-DG720, even more amazing. These speakers are a match with other Sony products.
Great Completer Set
I paired these with a set of SSB-1000 Bookshelf speakers.
They are a great set to complete for 5.0 surround, i would suggest a separate sub because i low end on the bookshelf speakers or this set.
Center is clear and crisp, rears are mid-small and do the job just fine.

This System Will Make Your Room Go BOOM, BOOM, BOOM!
I have waited about 6 weeks to post a review on this product, due to some reviews having issues with there subwoofer and other issues. Let me first start off by saying, I have not had any issues with the home theater system (knock on wood).

The sound this system makes with my new Vizio M3D550KD 55-Inch 240 Hz Class Theater 3D Edge Lit Razor LED LCD HDTV with VIZIO Internet Apps - Black, is unbelievable. I have the speakers mounted to Pinpoint White Speaker Wall/Ceiling Mount for Pre-Wired Home Theater - Pinpoint AM20W, except the center speaker which I have sitting on my entertainment center.

To calibrate the sound to match your room, use the Audyssey Room Correction that comes with the system. It takes about 15 minutes and makes a world of a difference. You can always adjust the subwoofer to meet your BOOM BOOM...

There is an easy trick to fix sub-woofer problem

After comparing this system with other Onkyo receivers, and noting excellent reviews for other Onkyo systems, I decided to take the risk despite subwoofer malfunction, with it in mind that Amazon's customer service is excellent if I do encounter a problem for the purchase. After all, it has over 1000W power and adequate connections for my purpose. I bought it in November. It is holidays shopping season so Amazon gives me until the end of January to return it if something goes wrong, though I admit that it could be a pain on the neck to return a 70+ lb box.

The receiver is exactly what I was looking for. I would give it 4.5 stars if I could, due to the big size of speakers and the thin wire many others noted in their reviews. My review started as a 4 star when I first got it.
This system is amazing. Tons of options, lots of configurations for setting up everything, and tons of settings. The Audyssey sound set up make setting up everything and optimizing your system flawless and easy. The lack of proprietary connections means that replacement parts are cheap, easy to find and customize. The sound is great compared to previous Sony 5.1 system.

When you buy this system also get new wires, it comes with 24 gauge wires, I suggest 16 gauge, also get banana plugs (They make for a cleaner and nicer looking setup.)

Only a few problems, which is why I gave it 4 stars;
Needs an update bad to have better functionality with a PS3. Turn deep color off on the PS3 for it to work properly.
Wires are too small as mentioned above.
Lack of Android support compared to Apple support

Good entry system
Update 5/8/12:
I've now moved into my new house and have this system set up and wall mounted.
A few things:
-Attaching these speakers using mounts is a pain. They only have a keyhole mounting option, and the mount set I bought which said it was compatible with keyhole speakers did not work. I had to buy some additional nuts and washers to get it to attach. I decided to only mount the rear speakers with the mounts, and have the front speakers hanging on wall screws. Mounting directly to the wall with screws actually works pretty well though. I attached some adhesive felt pads to the back of the speakers to eliminate any possible vibration against the wall.
-The ozone smell I mentioned initially is mostly gone.
-Low volume listening is still a bit of a pain. I find myself upping the center channel to make the voices stand out more late at night when the wife is asleep. The sound is great at higher volumes, though.

Great entry level HT system
I bought this a few days ago while it was $280. I received it yesterday and set it up. So far, I am very happy with this system. For the price, you can't go wrong. I really like the Iphone/Ipod support. You can control your music with the remote as well as see the songs/albums/etc on the receiver. It also charges through the USB. One thing to note is that the receiver gets hot. I have mine located in an entertainment center cabinet, so I keep the doors open while it is on. I think I will also buy a little fan to get some airflow just to be on the safe side. I cannot speak for reliability yet, as I have only had it for 1 day, but I will try to update my review once I have owned it for a while.

OK, But it is Limited
I bought the HT-3400 last year and it is virtually identical to this one. I had an initial failure within 3 days and had to get it replaced and so far this one is working, however Onkyo's quality is nowhere what it used to be. I liked the set up in the beginning because it was such an improvement over the tiny speakers that came with my TV, however over time I came to realize that much was lacking. What was lacking was a direct result of the low-end speakers that came with the system. It is difficult to expect 3 1/4 inch speakers to reproduce a lot of high quality sound. Even though they're listed as having a frequency response of 80 - 20 KHz they don't mention being measured at + or - 3 Db, which is the commonly accepted standard.

I ended up replacing everything except the receiver and sub woofer. Obviously money was a concern or I wouldn't have bought a HTIB in the first place, but now that I have Sony SS-F6000 towers in the front, and BIC DV62Si's for surrounds (great...
