I Am Impressed
I have had a "total" sound system in my home for more than 10 years - a set of Bose indoor speakers in each of three rooms; a set of Bose outdoor speakers in the eaves over my front door and another set in my outdoor screen room; and a set of Cerwin Vega "bookshelf" speakers in my TV/entertainment room. Just today, I added a set of Polk Audio Atrium 4 speakers to the system in order to pipe sound (satellite TV/DVD/CD)to an arbor swing located about 50 feet from the back of my house. I must say, I am impressed. The Polk Audio Atrium 4s sound every bit as good as the Bose speakers (if not better), and the quality of their construction appears outstanding. As this is the the set which will be most exposed to the elements, I was encouraged by the excellent "weatherproof" specifications and the fit and finish of the Atrium 4s. Only time will tell if they hold up as well as the outdoor speakers I now have, but at a price about $100 cheaper than the least expensive Bose outdoor...

Pleased overall
For $100 these are some pretty good overall outdoor speakers. I had a pair of JBL outdoors that developed some buzzing and pops so I needed a replacement and I went with these. For reference, every other speaker I own (except for a pair in the garage) is JBL, this was my first Polk experience.

Generally speaking they are a solid set of speakers. They give a pretty balanced sound all around but lack a little fullness in the lower mid-range. This is particularly noticeable when playing orchestral type music like film scores or piano heavy music. Going from the lower mids to bass is where they really start to have trouble. For the size of the speaker I certainly wasn't expecting to really "feel" bass but these do drop off noticeably in the lower frequency ranges. If there's something to knock with the Atrium 4's, that's it. With other types of music (country, rock, etc...) those issues aren't as noticeable. With that said they offer a nice high end treble sound that is...
Scary good sound from such tiny things
At $99, these are not the most expensive speakers I've ever bought, and of course not the biggest. At lower volumes you might think they're underpowered. But give them some juice. Everywhere between half-loud to uncomfortably loud you'll be shocked (seriously, shocked) at the clarity of the sound.

Pleasant but over priced
Summary: A pleasant sounding speaker for back ground listening but over priced and out classed by the competition. Tonality is distorted to produce pleasant sound rather than accurate sound. Bass is loose and wumpy sounding. The 301's can shake the room but only over a limited range of bass frequencies. Direct-reflecting design hurts imaging. The combination of bad imaging, unrealistic tonality and loose bass make them a poor choice for home theater. Fit and finish are only OK for the price.

Background: My roommate has a pair of 301s set up in our living room. I have a more expensive "audiophile" type system set up in the side room. Often I think it's hard to get good product reviews off the internet. You either have the people who *hate* the company (pick one) and are out to trash the name or you have people who bought the product and are defending their choice. You rarely have someone who has spent considerable time with the product (not just 15 minute store demo) yet...

Great for some forms of music, good for others
Two things I need to share up front: first, I have widely diverse musical tastes. Second, what I don't know about acoustics would fill multiple volumes of encyclopedias. I tell you this up front so you'll know the perspective this review is written from.

We ordered these speakers after listening to them at a major electronics retailer I don't think Amazon will let me mention by name. Delivery was super quick. Be aware that these are large and heavy by bookshelf speaker standards. Setup was a breeze; I'm using an older JVC CD player/receiver we've had stored for years.

The first music I played on them was a duet Jazz CD from Boney James and Rick Braun. I was just a tad disappointed. Don't get me wrong: sound was full and quite crisp, but the stories about Bose products being heavy on the bass are definitely true.

The second CD was a greatest hits collection by BB King. This time the speakers KICKED A**. The sound was powerful yet absolutely...
An Outstanding Bookshelf Speaker at Any Price
The reviewer below identifying himself as "An Electronics Fan" obviously has a deep bias against Bose. His multiple reviews about Bose products--here and elsewhere--are transparently motivated by some animus against Bose. Was he fired by Bose? Did a member of the Bose family reject his romantic advances? Did a Bose executive accidentally run over his cat? Did he drop a Bose speaker on his foot and hurt his toe? The true motivation for this guy's negative reviews would be fun to know. In the meantime, what we do know is that he has no credibility, and his reviews (two here, others elsewhere for other Bose products; he's made maligning Bose his life's work, apparently)) should disregarded.

Nice little speaker, but mounting is tricky
I'm using the speakers as rear surround speakers, and as such they seem to sound fine though this is not exactly a demanding application.

They are small and I find them unobtrusive.

Overall I like the speaker, but I wasn't totally happy with the mounting system for a couple of reasons:

Firstly, the threaded bushing on the back of the speaker that the mount screws into is not secured well to the speaker. There is a notice in the package warning about this, you must be very careful not to put too much stress on the bushing or it will come out of the speaker. This is poor design; they should fix it, not just include a warning notice!

Secondly, the mount that comes with this speaker is a generic 3rd party product, not specifically designed for this speaker. Two different length screws are provided for attaching the mount to the speaker, but the short screw is too short and the long screw is too long. I had to cut the longer screw down to...
Great surround speakers!
Great speakers for rear/rear back surround. Did not have any idea what speakers to get for 7.1 surround. Was going to get same brand speakers as fronts and center. Was amazed at quality for price. Xbox comes alive with these bad boys. Movies too. Am completely satisfied. Well, wish they swiveled down as well as side to side, but come on for this price. Forget about it. Buy'em. U won't regret. Got the new onkyo 7.2 to run'em. Like buttah.

Replacing rear surroud sound speakers
My rear surround speakers were the Bose 161; I was looking to replace them so that I could move them to my front height position instead. The Fluance sounded like it would fit the bill and the price could not be beat. Plus they are a Bipolar type and well after reading a lot of positive reviews by others I decided that this would make a great addition to my overall sound performance. Wow for the price they performed the way I wanted a surround speaker to perform, and hey for the price I could have been taking a chance, but well it turned out to be a good chance, it is what I was looking for. With the Bipolar design the Fluance filled the rear surround field perfectly, and with the Bose 161 as front height speakers it worked out well also. I perfered the Bose at the front height position because of it's ability to be angled accordingly at the listener. Amazing Surround Speakers
I bought these after hearing a friend's Fluance AVHTB+ Surround Sound Home Theater 5 Speaker System 5.1 system. I was planning on an upgrade from 5.1 to 7.1. My speakers were all Wharfedale, but Wharfedale no longer makes the bipolar surround I wanted, so I thought I would try these as my side surrounds until I could find something that matched my Wharfedale Vanguard based system better.

I was blown away! These inexpensive little surround satellites timbre matched very closely with my Wharfedales and they sound amazing! The ferro-fluid cooled neodynium tweeters are sharp and precise without being etchy, scratchy, or fatiguing. The mid-range is smooth and solid, full without being bloated.

In my room the base from these rolls off at about 125, so I did have to raise the crossover point on my sub to 120. But everything blended smoothly from there and I am super pleased.

Serious bang for the buck.
$125 is price for BOTH speakers mind you, and these are top-notch quality Canadian constructed bipoles. Definitely pleased with the value of this set. They also come with holes in the back so you don't have to buy a wall mount (I had to return a pair of wall mounts I bought from Amazon after I got these). Highly recommended for any sound system. I placed these bipoles on the back wall of my 5.1 system, one foot from the ceiling, and about three feet above my listening position (as recommended from the audiophile forums). The wrap around effect it has going is truely amazing. I had these for over a month now, and they really shine after they've been broken in. Just make sure you calibrate your speakers' delay and volume properly. Very proud of this purchase and will buy from Fluance again if given the opportunity.

Superior Satellite/Music Speaker
I purchased 5 speaker package Subsonix TP 5.0 and these SFITSAT 150 are the front and rear channel speakers in the package. Build quality is first rate, solid MDF cabinet eliminates resonance even at high volumes. Incredibly articulate, crisp and clear and detailed sound. These are excellent rear channel speakers, or front channel with a subwoofer. Also superb for music. Bass in this small 2-way design is modest as you would expect, so a subwoofer is best. Amazon pricing is very compelling to pick up an extra set for 7.1 I strongly recommend.

Great satellites for 5.1 or 7.1 systems for the price
I have a all Polk system and needed a pair of satellites for rear surround use and these were a great match.

Speakers have plenty of volume when (I have a Harman Kardon receiver) and the midrange is good. I would get these over the RM 101 or the RM 7 because it has a 3.5" driver vs. 2.5" on the newer models. The bigger driver provides a more flexible frequency response of 40-22000 hz vs 95-22000 hz. You'll get better midrange sound which is what surrounds do most of the time. There's also a silk .5" tweeter which is pretty smooth, no harsh brightness here.

Provided you have a decent sub to take care of the low end, these should will be great surround speakers. Especially for the price.

Great speakers, but what bracket?
Review update - I moved the two new Polk speakers to be my front speakers and after hearing how they sound there I have since bought another pair to replace my older Sony side surround speakers. These sound great and I am real happy with them. Great sound at a reasonable price.

I added these as rear surround speakers for my 7.1 system and they sound great. My only quibble is with the "Integrated keyhole slot wall mounting brackets". These are simply an extension to the speaker back that has a hole in it for hanging from a nail or screw (like a cheap wall clock). They do have the standard threaded hole for use with regular satellite speaker wall brackets (which I purchased separately). They're still a great deal but I really wouldn't plan on mounting these with the "integrated bracket".
Great for the rear surrounds
Got these for the extra two needed to make a full 7.1 surround for the RM6750 Polk system. Very satisfied with the speakers, and of course match perfectly the satellites that come with the RM6750 system.

Running a Yamaha RX-V765 with 95W through these using 16 gauge wire. Wonderful range and clarity. Mine did not come with any mounts, but have great molded hooks that you can use a deeper wood screw to hang if you will not need to aim them in a different direction from the wall face.

Great value and small package.
These speakers are great as rear surrounds. They are small and unassuming. They sound pretty good too. The install was a breeze. I got both speakers installed on the wall in about 30 minutes. I would buy them again.

Wonderfully transparent sound, reasonable price
We bought several pairs of these 161 speakers when they were first introduced a little over a year ago. We use one pair for the surround speakers in our theater system, and a pair in each of the other rooms of our home.

Although we are longtime Bose fans, we decided to audition these in an audio store as we had been disappointed in a Bose center channel speaker we had purchased previously, (based on reputation, we didn't listen first!). We were favorbly impressed in the store and have been very pleased with them in our home. Regardless of room decor, the speakers produce clean, stereo sound. (Its possible to identify orchestral instruments and their location!)

These speakers are very linear above 80-90Hz, to the audible limits. They drop off rapidly below about 80Hz. Bass frequencies are adequately reproduced for orchestral music but will need to be augmented for heavy bass or special cinematic effects. (sub-woofer)

Great surround speakers or stereo in a small room
I'm not usually a huge Bose afficianado, but I use a pair of Bose 161 speakers as my rear surround speakers and they're great! I have much larger speakers for my L, R and center - and the 161s compliment them perfectly. I can hear very detailed sound coming from them - perfect for effects in movies.

I'm not sure I'd use these as my primary speakers in my living room, but for surround applications, or small stereo needs, they fit the bill perfectly. They're attractive, solidly built, and easily mount to walls using the included wall brackets.
In line with expectations
The sport of Bose bashing aside, keep in mind these are relatively small enclosures with two 2.5 inch drivers that can crate a rear sound stage much larger than their size might suggest, and can do so without being overly fussy about placement. There always seems to be someone out there who sets their surround settings to "large", pumps up the bass, then complains that two 2.5 inch drivers in small vented plastic enclosures "have no lows", and that the sound is distorted. Neither the VCS 10 center channel or the 161s will play ear-busting levels -- the trade off of small drivers in small enclosures, and the theatre surround settings and bass management must be set accordingly. Doing this, the Bose 161s (especially when paired with the VCS 10) can produce clear focused dialog and convincing surround effects in smaller rooms. Can you do "better"? Sure, larger enclosures, with bigger drivers can play louder and lower but that doesn't mean the Bose don't deserve consideration on the...

Five-way binding posts simplify connection with several different terminations of speaker cable (including banana plugs), and the NS-AW150s even come with two lengths of cable to get you started.

Buy These Speakers NOW!
After doing a ton of research on outdoor speakers, I finally settled on these Yamahas, mainly because the price was so ridiculously low ($59.95 for the pair, including mounting hardware) that I felt I couldn't go wrong, especially since my next choice (Polk) would have cost me nearly twice as much.

I mounted these babies on the back wall of my house, about four feet apart, just under the eave, so that they pointed out at the deck. Although the mounting brackets are included, Yamaha does NOT include any screws to secure these brackets to the wall. I ended up using some 2-1/2 inch long wood screws...but your application may differ depending on how or with what your house is sided.

Yamaha also does NOT include speaker cable. I used some cheap 12-gauge stuff from Best Buy but 14 or 16-gauge lamp cord (also known as zip cord) from any hardware store will work just as well. Seeing as the speakers will be outside, I don't recommend the usual cheap, thin speaker cable...

These are great speakers!
These are great speakers. My husband put them up over the weekend and wow what spectacular sound. It was packaged well and came with all the mounting necessities. We love listening to 50's jazz and the crispness of the cymbals and the brushes on the snare give you chills. Never again will we go back to large bulky speakers. I read the excellent reviews for these speakers and was skeptical. However, the price was right so there wasn't much risk. So . . . I bought a pair. The reviews were spot on. They sound is terrific, the price was unbeatable, and look is very acceptable (even to my Interior Designer wife). Unless you are an audio perfectionist, you'll never get a better price/performance value.

Amazing For The Price
I was looking to get speakers for a 16x18 size media room in my basement. I have already experienced shopping for ceiling speakers for my upstairs common room. I went with very high end speakers having a company install "speaker craft" along with a sonos system. I paid $8,000 dollars and although they did an amazing job and the speakers can make the house shake; I did not have the same financing options for the basement. I took my chances with these speakers thinking that they were so cheap that if they didn't work, I can just give them away. It turns out that they speakers are awesome. I definately hesitate to turn them up to see what they can do as I am sure they would blow. But believe me when I tell you that I have them loud enough to impress most people who have not alerady heard the system I have upstairs. This was a killer deal and I wanted to share it with everyone!
It is nice for a change to get a good deal on quality sound.

Great Sound for the $
I bought 4 pairs of these for a 4500 sq ft custom house of a client of mine. Installed them throughout the house with in wall volume controls hooked up to a Pioneer AV Receiver...they sound great. Install was a snap...good quality of hooks that flip around to hold in drywall, good connectors for wires to run into, etc.
I have put in a lot of in wall speakers over the years and have found that for most people using them for just whole house sound, you don't need the big brands with the big cost. Just buy something like this from a name brand and save yourself some money. You are never cranking the up all the way, just for background music during parties, or working around the house.
Good for the price!
I bought 6 pairs of these for an office sound system and installed in a drop ceiling. They really sound great, with decent bass, clear highs and solid midrange. They installed easily and securely and as I said, the price was certainly good. My only problem, which caused me to subract a star, was that at least 8 or 9 of the speakers had stress cracks in the plastic housing...some in the round bezel which actually shows when you install. This doesn't impact the sound or their ability to stay mounted securely. But clearly there is a manufacturing problem. Either they are torqueing the screws too tight during assembly, or the plastic is compressing after assembly and cracking.
Even so, if I had to add sound to additional rooms, I'd still use these as the sound and price are great.

Great value and small package.
These speakers are great as rear surrounds. They are small and unassuming. They sound pretty good too. The install was a breeze. I got both speakers installed on the wall in about 30 minutes. I would buy them again.
